MACHU PICCHU I took hundreds of pictures of Machu

I took hundreds of pictures of Machu Picchu on my visit and there are probably better ones than this, but this just summed up my visit so much - rain clouds dissipating to make way for glorious sunshine, making the place feel even more mystical than normal. I’ve dreamt about this for years and on climbing that last step to see this view, I found myself welling up and my heart beating like a butterfly (that might have been the altitude/25,000 steps I had just climbed though).

This is the stunning view from the start of the Colca Canyon trek - a three-day hike that starts with a descent from almost 3,500m into the fourth deepest canyon in the world. With views of Pre-Incan terraces (1500 years old), overnight stays with the local (but dwindling numbers of) families whose only way in and out of the canyon until 5 years ago was up and down the steep, narrow and treacherous mountain paths, and seeing Andean Condors, it was truly a magical experience. Although, getting back up again was particularly difficult after a 4.30am start, in the dark, with two twisted ankles and the fitness level of Homer Simpson.

After a month of being a busy bee and hostessing o

After a month of being a busy bee and hostessing on the barge, I finally got the chance to explore the waterway by bike and see Enchanté in action with @onplanetclaire last weekend! Weather wasn’t as good as it has been (obviously it’s only glorious sunshine when I’m working on board) but I can’t complain; this is the life - cruising down the Canal du Midi at something silly like 3km an hour, watching the world overtake us as we glide along the water!

That’s it - I’m heading off on my next adventure! My mum will be happy as it’s much closer to home this time; I’ll be working on a luxury boat on the Canal du Midi in the south of France for the next few months to save up some pennies for my next big adventure - Latin America! I’ll miss waking up to these mountains every day but a new water-filled landscape approaches. Fingers crossed I don’t fall overboard!!

A year ago today I made the first step on my trave

A year ago today I made the first step on my travels; I had no idea just how much that time would change me and alter my path. What started as a possible escape from a difficult patch of my life turned into a freedom I wasn’t expecting. I’ve learnt more about myself in this year than I had in the 28.5 years previous. I’ve visited 21 countries on four continents, slept on countless planes, trains and buses, dealt with injuries and anxiety, met people I loved (and some I really didn’t), spent more time alone than I would have ever dared before (and fell in love with solitude), climbed mountains (real and mental), relaxed on paradise islands, got lost in chaotic cities, and kept discovering what I want in life. I took almost 10,000 pictures, which I will only bore my family with, so here’s a snapshot of my “memories” - an accurate example of how it feels inside my mind.
